Hokusai. The Master’s Legacy

Museo dell'Ara Pacis
Italy, Rome
October 12, 2017 - January 14, 2018

Days of exhibition

Curator Rossella Menegazzo presents a survey of Hokusai’s work and life through a selection of works from the Chiba City Museum of Art and important Japanese collections such as Uragami Mitsuru Collection and Kawasaki Isago no Sato Museum. The Chiossone Oriental Art Museum in Genoa also contributed generous loans. The exceptional selection of colour woodblock prints and paintings on hanging scrolls will be displayed in rotations of 100 works every 8 weeks to protect the fragile works from light exposure. The exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of Hokusai’s work, and also offers comparisons with some of the artists who followed in his footsteps. The next generation of artists created new lines, shapes and colour compositions within the school of ukioye, and included artists like Hokuba, Hokkei (1790-1850) and Hokumei (1786-1868). The exhibition also features Keisai Eisen (1790-1848), who never studied under Hokusai, but whose work deeply influenced him to develop prints depicting female beauty and landscapes between 1810 and 1830.
