The exhibition is curated by Jean-Michel Bouhours, curator of the Centre Pompidou, and brings together 80 masterpieces from the collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. It aims to analyze the evolution of portraiture and self-portraits during the 20th century through a selection of works by Henri Matisse, Bonnard, Amedeo Modigliani, Magritte, Suzanne Valadon, Maurice de Vlaminck, Severini, Francis Bacon, Robert Delaunay, Brancusi, Derain, Max Ernst, Miró, Léger, Adami, Pablo Picasso, Giacometti, Dubuffet, Fautrier, Baselitz, Marquet, Tamara de Lempicka and many others. The selected works will form a metaphorical jigsaw puzzle, which will also highlight some of the pivotal historical events of the 20th century and how these affected contemporary notions of modernity and in turn the arts.
