Bizarre worlds, visionary landscapes, beautiful women, kabuki actors, cats, carps, fantastic animals, legendary heroes, samurai and bandits. These are the characters in the world of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861). He has been the subject of numerous recent exhibitions in Japan and around the world. This is the first time Italy pays tribute to the artist, the undisputed master of early 19th-century Ukiyoe, the colour woodblock prints from Japan that have exerted a powerful influence on manga, anime, tattoos and pop culture in general. The exhibition presents a complete survey of Kuniyoshi’s production, highlighting his extraordinary technique and inventiveness through 165 colour woodblock prints on loan from Japan.
