Nickolas Muray. Celebrity Portraits

Palazzo Ducale
Italy, Genoa
October 16, 2014 - February 8, 2015

Days of exhibition

The exhibition features more than 200 photographs that capture the forty-year career of Nickolas Muray, one of the most fascinating and intriguing photographers in America. Beyond his signature use of CarBro printing, which made Muray’s shots unmistakable, the Hungarian-born photographer was known for his portraits of movie stars, show business personalities and for creating some of the most famous advertising campaigns in popular magazines. The exhibition is curated by Salomon Grimberg, in collaboration with Nickolas Muray Photo Archives and George Eastman House. Among the images, there is also a selection of black and white photographs on loan from Condé Nast, Vanity Fair, and numerous other private collections. A special section isdedicated to the portraits of Frida Kahlo, Muray’s friend and confidant, taken between the 1930s and 1940s.It’s one of these shots that found its way to the cover of Vogue in 2012 and turned Frida into a pop icon.
